"I welcome you on this journey with me. I thank you for sticking with me and supporting me, listening to me talk about this because it's so interesting how a good chunk of the population has a uterus, and yet conditions of the uterus are very under-researched, under-studied. Up until even a few years ago, have just been considered something that's in the person's head — Hysteria, if you will." — Emily, 17 Days Until Uterus Eviction Day >>> SUPPORT THE SHOW https://ko-fi.com/thatshystericalpodcast <<< ** Stay in the loop with our latest episodes, upcoming topics, and exciting announcements — Sign Up for the Monthly Newsletter! ** In this episode: Introduction to Emily, her Adenomyosis journey up to this point, and her countdown to eviction day — her hysterectomy! "One of the things I've noticed about talking about periods and hysterectomies, especially with people who are older than I am, is they're much more open to talking about that because most likely they've gone through some gynecological type of thing or they've known somebody who's gone through a hysterectomy. I'm always really grateful to have people like that in my life and to come across people who are open like that and who have the stories and willingness to share, which I guess is why I'm starting this podcast." — Emily, 22 Days Until Uterus Eviction Day >>> SUPPORT THE SHOW https://ko-fi.com/thatshystericalpodcast <<< ** Stay in the loop with our latest episodes, upcoming topics, and exciting announcements — Sign Up for the Monthly Newsletter! ** In This Episode: Emily shares some reassurance and comforting words from a friend at church who also went through a hysterectomy. It's funny she apologizes to her editor when her editor is her, lol. Acknowledging all the time that's passed since she got her Adenomyosis diagnosis and now. It's important to note that Adenomyosis cannot be officially diagnosed until a hysterectomy is performed. Grateful for the people who say, "Let me know if you need anyone to talk to" and MEAN IT (I'm guilty of not always meaning it when it comes to people I don't know so well). If you've been nervous about your upcoming hysterectomy, this is your sign to read some success stories! They truly do help. Sorry for the scatterbrained first few episodes and I appreciate you sticking with me! The overwhelm of throwing a Hysterectomy into my already busy schedule. Note from Future-Emily Hey there! This is post-hysterectomy Emily coming in to say that my friend also recommended getting an abdonimal binder and I held off for a while, but now that I have it, I wish I had it from Day 1 of Recovery! ;-) Additional Links and Resources: Links not working in your podcast player app? "I'm glad I didn't look up what a biopsy was before having to get one. I'm glad it was like, I walk into the office for a consult and they're like, Do you want to do the biopsy today? Feeling stressed! Is it overwhelm? Is it PMS? Is it the biopsy? Maybe it's all of the above! Planning for fun with friends the day before surgery despite saying no to everything else extra. Sad to think about having to miss choir and singing and possibly the big holiday concert planned for about a month after surgery. Adding more things to my mental toolbox of things that give me energy and brighten my day: singing, getting out into nature, uplifting and inspirational podcasts Disappointing people is hard … but a bit easier when they don't even apologize for being a no-show. Note from Future-Emily Despite my best efforts to say, "No," to a bunch of things. I wish I had said No to more. Not the chocolate making class, obviously! But I could have done without saying yes to the extra stuff I ended up adding to my plate. Additional Links and Resources: Links not working in your podcast player app? Stress? Anxiety? PMDD? All of the Above? Lots of talk about period blood (it's a period-heavy podcast, what did you expect?) Lots of prep getting done for the hysterectomy — preparing my clients, preparing my family, and preparing the house My Book — "The Story Behind: The Extraordianry History of Ordinary Things" The pre-op anxiety may be getting the best of me and I've been going a bit to the dark side when it comes to "What If?" preparations — did I really need an In Case of Death Document? Eh … Anyone else go into Hypervigilant Efficiant Mode in instances (or imagined threat) of death? Learning to ask, "What do you suggest I do?" and "What's the next step?" when feeling stuck. PMS+ADHD=Lots of mental storms brewing and going on. Since I'm not getting my ovaries removed, I'm wondering how PMS will go once my period is out of the picture. Adenomyosis Advice Association Facebook Group — Facebook Considering taking a social media break for a little bit to focus on my upcoming surgery and the work I need to do "I did my best" and "I am enough" are some great things to remind yourself any time of day. Is nesting for surgery a thing? Because I'm doing that I think. Again, in disbelief that all this constant pain will actually change. But maybe? Note from Future-Emily Yes, in fact, I AM glad we didn't need to use that ICOD document, LOL! Also, I'm really grateful for a friend from church who gave me a shocked face when I told her I was doing all this death preparation stuff and told me, in the most straightforward Scorpio way possible to knock that shit off and focus on what I know to be true. I think that, plus getting through those first few days of my period, helped keep me from staying in that mindset for too long. "I am worthy of, if not a pain-free existence, at least an existence with less pain, less burden." — Emily, 18 Days Until Uterus Eviction Day >>> SUPPORT THE SHOW https://ko-fi.com/thatshystericalpodcast <<< ** Stay in the loop with our latest episodes, upcoming topics, and exciting announcements — Sign Up for the Monthly Newsletter! ** In This Episode: Starting off the episode with best-case scenarios, followed closely behind by worst-case scenarios — thank you again, Anxiety+ADHD, for playing such a *fun* role in my life So much unknown right now, but let's live in this world where this IS my last period. What it's like being tied to a heating pad and in pain after a morning of caretaking and errands. Get ready for my birth stories — apparently, I use childbirth to distract me from period pain. This period happens to be a little whack-a-doo. Does it know it's the last? Wondering (once again) what it'll be like to NOT be in this pain and build my life around the complications of chronic pain. Did … did I compare an epidural to Game Genie? And compare my pain to levels of a video game? Yep. Gratitude, gratitude, gratitude, and the joy that comes from being helpful. It's taken a while to find my own voice … or even find the voice of pain that signified that I finally needed to get this surgery. Building an entire life around this uterus has been a burden. Oh … and get ready for an Ah-ha moment! Thinking about what I could do without this pain, discomfort, and burden of Adenomyosis. What's that like?! Visualizing life WITHOUT the pain (not "despite"). Getting a little worried about the compulsory cleaning and the "one more thing, one more thing" mindset I've gotten. Is it my OCD tendencies rearing their ugly heads? If the birth stories wasn't enough, you're also going to get my biopsy run-down. Let's have our last hurrah, uterus! And then more fears that I didn't do enough and my condition has gotten worse. But we don't know that. When do I tell my husband I'll probably still get PMS? Note from Future-Emily Oh Past-Emily, I wish I could hug you and tell you how good you'll feel just WEEKS away from today! And even though we didn't have the answers we have now, remember that quote from Mark Twain — "I've had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened." "I am intentionally focusing on the positives to try to get me through to that day. It almost feels like going against everything. It feels like society has been learning in the past few years of "Don't stick your head in the sand. Don't go to that toxic positivity." But I think I'm also taking it with a lot of radical acceptance. I'm trying to, at least." — Emily, 17 Days Until Uterus Eviction Day >>> SUPPORT THE SHOW https://ko-fi.com/thatshystericalpodcast <<< ** Stay in the loop with our latest episodes, upcoming topics, and exciting announcements — Sign Up for the Monthly Newsletter! ** In This Episode: Telling my mom about my procedure went as well as it could have, all things considered. CW: I briefly share my mom's hysterectomy story that didn't go so well for her. Personal preference: Fewer medical horror stories for those having surgery. Trying to avoid toxic positivity and focus more on radical acceptance — but with a positive spin, perhaps? More disbelief that this pain may ACTUALLY one day not bother me so much. Did I just create this cozy lifestyle around my Adenomyosis and it's my comfort zone (oddly)? Tara Brach's Podcast and Book are favorites in my mental health toolbox. My ultimate goal in preparing for surgery is Peace of Mind and knowing everyone I love will be OK. The I Am app (Apple/Google) I like for me affirmations and mindset-shifting reminders throughout the day. Note from Future-Emily Psst. Feeling positive that the hysterectomy will go as planned and it won't need to be any more invasive than laparoscopic Pre-surgery anxiety and working through an anxiety attack New Moon, No Uterus! Let's Go! Note from Future-Emily: Aww, Past-Emily. I wish you could understand just how little you needed to worry about post-surgical pain. Of course there was no way to know how surgery was going to affect me and my capabilities, but in that moment what I needed was more sleep and less worry about future events. But thank goodness for the support of my husband who reassured me he'd do every silly little thing I needed him to do, no matter how small or insignificant (and he has). "It's less than two weeks away. I have said to my family, I have zero shits for anything other than getting ready for this, for getting my business in order, for getting my work done, for getting the house ready for recovery. For getting me ready for recovery. I have zero shits." — Emily, 13 Days Until Uterus Eviction Day >>> SUPPORT THE SHOW https://ko-fi.com/thatshystericalpodcast <<< ** Stay in the loop with our latest episodes, upcoming topics, and exciting announcements — Sign Up for the Monthly Newsletter! ** In This Episode: Whew! It's a frustrating start to the episode. The stress of the upcoming hysterectomy is coming out. After a rough morning of video game system troubleshooting gone wrong, the idea of adding more to the pile of stuff already going on is not the last thing I want I keep toying with the idea of making a non-explicit version of the podcast where I bleep out the swears, but this one would just be one long bleeeeeep I think! There's so much vying for my attention in the weeks leading up to surgery that I'm having trouble juggling it all. Learn my favorite method of organizing and prioritizing what I need to do, which President Eisenhower supposedly used — categorizing tasks as Urgent-Important; Urgent-Not Important, Not Urgent-Important, and Not Urgent-Not Important If you need a reminder to count the good things you did for yourself today, consider this your nudge! And if you can't think of anything, is there something right now you can do quickly for yourself? Take your vitamins? Get a glass of water? Go for a walk? And don't forget to show yourself grace (talking to me too, here) Tara Brach's Podcast and Radical Acceptance Book are favorites in my mental health toolbox. Also, yay! I made an appointment with my therapist! Additional Links and Resources: Links not working in your podcast player app? "I will not be capable of 100% Mom Mode that I've been in. And I can't even say 100% because I'll tell you, Adenomyosis, my period, PMS, they knock me out. So there are days where I am parenting from a couch or parenting from bed, and it sucks. And I don't even feel like 100% a parent. I feel like I'm doing the 100% I can do for that day." — Emily, 13 Days Until Uterus Eviction Day >>> SUPPORT THE SHOW https://ko-fi.com/thatshystericalpodcast <<< ** Stay in the loop with our latest episodes, upcoming topics, and exciting announcements — Sign Up for the Monthly Newsletter! ** In This Episode: We're starting off the episode with descriptions of the last days of period pains and what it's like suffering from Adenomyosis/Endometriosis pain month after month If you think having a kid in school makes parenting any easier, think again because sick days happen more frequently than you'd think. The lack of babysitting I've had lately is also getting to me in this episode. It's been non-stop Mom Mode for weeks, on top of surgery prep and work, work, work mode! Sorry for the bitter episode. I wanted a raw podcast and here it is, I guess! Note from Future-Emily: So far, the lack of pain has led to less stress overall! That said, when I recorded this episode was a particularly stressful period of time, period or not! Additional Links and Resources: Links not working in your podcast player app? "I keep thinking if I didn't have to deal with this stupid pain in my uterus right now, I could deal with everything else. And maybe that's not true. Maybe that's just the excuse I'm telling myself. But everything is a lot more irritating when I feel like I have a 15-pound rock in between my hips, pushing out, making me feel pregnant." — Emily, 13 Days Until Uterus Eviction Day >>> SUPPORT THE SHOW https://ko-fi.com/thatshystericalpodcast <<< ** Stay in the loop with our latest episodes, upcoming topics, and exciting announcements — Sign Up for the Monthly Newsletter! ** In This Episode: A love letter to Cannabis (legal for adult use in the state I'm in), which has been one of the best pain management tools for period and ovulation pain I've found NOTE: As of the recording of this, I was under the impression that I had to give up THC/CBD up to a week before my surgery so a lot of my stress was wondering how I was going to deal with pain and anxiety without it. My personal experience comparing CBD to Xanax The importance of reminding myself I am not my pain and I am not my uterus. Are my supplements a placebo? Maybe, but that doesn't stop me from noticing a difference when I stop taking them. Planning for a T-Break is somewhat hard to think about, even for someone who successfully quit cigarettes after being a 10-year smoker During these last few weeks, I was already cutting back on my cannabis consumption and it was taking a toll on my mood (if you couldn't already tell) There's a point where I imitate exactly how my anxiety sounds with its intrusive thoughts that even I scared myself a little when I heard it back This is dedicated to all those who also watched the show "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" and now think every pain or period abnormality is a surprise pregnancy at least once a month Let's hope a good night's sleep is just the ticket for a better mood the next day (and next episode). Note from Future-Emily: Oh, Past-Emily :-) this might be one of the funniest weeks leading up to surgery because you're going to get a very nice surprise in a few days, I promise. That said, I'm already listening back to this episode and glad I'm able to cut back now that the surgery is over! Additional Links and Resources: Links not working in your podcast player app? "Currently, the countdown is twelve days. Twelve days. So it's getting more real and time is going both very slowly and faster than I would like it to go as far as my to-do list." — Emily, 12 Days Until Uterus Eviction Day >>> SUPPORT THE SHOW https://ko-fi.com/thatshystericalpodcast <<< ** Stay in the loop with our latest episodes, upcoming topics, and exciting announcements — Sign Up for the Monthly Newsletter! ** In This Episode: The art of procrastinating one thing with another — I have it mastered. Speaking as someone who edits dialogue and removes the word "just" a lot, it's not "just" Adenomyosis, it's not "just" a painful period, it's not "just" Endometriosis … etc. You are not "just" anything - you are a skilled individual with great things to offer the world. Balancing trying to get all my work done with unexpected illness in the house, on top of hysterectomy prep — it's a lot! A reminder (to both you and me) to give yourself grace and lovingkindness, as Tara Brach would suggest. Trying to juggle with tons of balls in the air and avoiding my email so that I don't have to take on any more balls. Making a plan to produce and release this podcast while in recovery (see below!) I started buying some post-hysterectomy clothes — oversized underwear, dresses so I can avoid waistbands on my incisions, oversized sweatpants, and nightgowns. Making plans for my choir's concert I have 4 weeks following the surgery — will I be able to sing? Maybe I'll sit for the performance? We'll see. Worrying about some of the stuff I won't be able to do post-surgery that I do for my mental health currently — yoga, driving, choir rehearsals. My cat, Little Man, makes an appearance a few times in this episode. I edited most of it out, but some of my commentary ended up staying — enjoy the blooper at the end! Note from Future-Emily: LOL! I love hearing myself getting excited about the beginning stages of building out a new podcast idea. Now that I'm in the thick of releasing episodes and getting ready for the next season, it's so much fun to revisit when all of this is brand new. And I also love that I was slowly building little bits and pieces for me to come back to following recovery to be able to tell this story :-) It's nice to fall in love with podcasting again as a creative space to play around in. Oh! And I ended up finally writing that email and, as I suspected, it took about 1/3rd of the time to write as it did to record this episode ::facepalm:: Additional Links and Resources: Links not working in your podcast player app?
